Derby Day in Australia can refer to a number of popular thoroughbred meetings, each headlined by a ‘Derby’ which is a classic staying race for three-year-olds.

The 2016 Victoria Derby will run on Saturday, October 31st.

On the Australian horse racing scene there are two major meetings known colloquially as Derby Day, one held in Melbourne and the other in Sydney.

The biggest Derby Day is without doubt Victoria Derby Day held in Victoria during the world renowned Melbourne Cup Carnival at the beautiful Flemington Racecourse in late October or early November each year.

Things the two Derby Days have in common are that they both are host to nine races – a traditional race meeting only has eight events, they have multiple Group 1 races on the card, and they are great betting days!

Victoria Derby Day

Held on the Saturday before the world’s richest handicap, the Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday of November, Victoria Derby Day is the opening of four race days that make up the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Attracting thousands of spectators and providing some of the spring’s premier betting opportunities Victoria Derby Day is host to a bumper nine-race program headlined by an incredible four Group 1 races.

The hottest race on the Victoria Derby Day race card is of course the namesake event, the $1.5 million group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) – one of the richest three-year-old races in the country.
